The 17 Best Ways to Maintain Weight Loss

Unfortunately, many people who lose weight end up gaining it back.

In fact, only about 20% of dieters who start off overweight end up successfully losing weight and keeping it off in the long term.

However, don’t let this discourage you. There are a number of scientifically proven ways you can keep the weight off, ranging from exercising to controlling stress.

These 17 strategies might be just what you need to tip the statistics in your favor and maintain your hard-won weight loss.

Why People Regain Weight

There are a few common reasons why people gain back the weight they lose. They are mostly related to unrealistic expectations and feelings of deprivation.

Restrictive diets: Extreme calorie restriction may slow your metabolism and shift your appetite-regulating hormones, which are both factors that contribute to weight regain.

Wrong mindset: When you think of a diet as a quick fix, rather than a long-term solution to better your health, you will be more likely to give up and gain back the weight you lost.

Lack of sustainable habits: Many diets are based on willpower rather than habits you can incorporate into your daily life. They focus on rules rather than lifestyle changes, which may discourage you and prevent weight maintenance.

1. Exercise Often

Regular exercise plays an important role in weight maintenance.

It may help you burn off some extra calories and increase your metabolism, which are two factors needed to achieve energy balance.

When you are in energy balance, it means you burn the same number of calories that you consume. As a result, your weight is more likely to stay the same.

Several studies have found that people who do at least 200 minutes of moderate physical activity a week (30 minutes a day) after losing weight are more likely to maintain their weight.

In some instances, even higher levels of physical activity may be necessary for successful weight maintenance. One review concluded that one hour of exercise a day is optimal for those attempting to maintain weight loss.

It’s important to note that exercise is the most helpful for weight maintenance when it’s combined with other lifestyle changes, including sticking to a healthy diet (8Trusted Source).

2. Try Eating Breakfast Every Day

Eating breakfast may assist you with your weight maintenance goals.

Breakfast eaters tend to have healthier habits overall, such as exercising more and consuming more fiber and micronutrients.

Furthermore, eating breakfast is one of the most common behaviors reported by individuals who are successful at maintaining weight loss.

One study found that 78% of 2,959 people who maintained a 30-pound (14 kg) weight loss for at least one year reported eating breakfast every day.

However, while people who eat breakfast seem to be very successful at maintaining weight loss, the evidence is mixed.

Studies do not show that skipping breakfast automatically leads to weight gain or worse eating habits.

In fact, skipping breakfast may even help some people achieve their weight loss and weight maintenance goals.

This may be one of the things that come down to the individual.

If you feel that eating breakfast helps you stick to your goals, then you definitely should eat it. But if you don’t like eating breakfast or are not hungry in the morning, there is no harm in skipping it.

3. Eat Lots of Protein

Eating a lot of protein may help you maintain your weight since protein can help reduce appetite and promote fullness.

Protein increases levels of certain hormones in the body that induce satiety and are important for weight regulation. Protein has also been shown to reduce levels of hormones that increase hunger.

Protein’s effect on your hormones and fullness may automatically reduce the number of calories you consume per day, which is an important factor in weight maintenance.

Furthermore, protein requires a significant amount of energy for your body to break down. Therefore, eating it regularly may increase the number of calories you burn during the day.

Based on several studies, it appears that protein’s effects on metabolism and appetite are most prominent when about 30% of calories are consumed from protein. This is 150 grams of protein on a 2,000 calorie diet.

4. Weigh Yourself Regularly

Monitoring your weight by stepping on the scale on a regular basis may be a helpful tool for weight maintenance. This is because it can make you aware of your progress and encourage weight control behaviors.

Those who weigh themselves may also eat fewer calories throughout the day, which is helpful for maintaining weight loss.

In one study, people who weighed themselves six days a week, on average, consumed 300 fewer calories per day than those who monitored their weight less frequently.

How often you weigh yourself is a personal choice. Some find it helpful to weigh in daily, while others are more successful in checking their weight once or twice a week.

5. Be Mindful of Your Carb Intake

Weight maintenance may be easier to accomplish if you pay attention to the types and amounts of carbs that you eat.

Eating too many refined carbs, such as white bread, white pasta, and fruit juices, can be detrimental to your weight maintenance goals.

These foods have been stripped of their natural fiber, which is necessary to promote fullness. Diets that are low in fiber are associated with weight gain and obesity.

Limiting your carb intake overall may also help you maintain your weight loss. Several studies have found that, in some cases, those who follow low-carb diets after weight loss are more likely to keep the weight off in the long term.

Additionally, people following low-carb diets are less likely to eat more calories than they burn, which is necessary for weight maintenance.

6. Lift Weights

Reduced muscle mass is a common side effect of weight loss.

It can limit your ability to keep weight off, as losing muscle reduces your metabolism, meaning you burn fewer calories throughout the day.

Doing some type of resistance training, such as lifting weights, may help prevent this loss of muscle and, in turn, preserve or even improve your metabolic rate.

Studies show that those who lift weights after weight loss are more likely to keep weight off by maintaining muscle mass.

To receive these benefits, it is recommended to engage in strength training at least twice a week. Your training regimen should work all muscle groups for optimal results.

7. Be Prepared for Setbacks

Setbacks are inevitable on your weight maintenance journey. There may be times when you give in to an unhealthy craving or skip a workout.

However, the occasional slip up doesn’t mean you should throw your goals out the window. Simply move on and follow through with better choices.

It can also help to plan ahead for situations that you know will make healthy eating challenging, such as an upcoming vacation or holiday.

8. Stick to Your Plan All Week Long (Even on Weekends)

One habit that often leads to weight regain is eating healthy on weekdays and cheating on weekends.

This mentality often leads people to binge on junk food, which can offset weight maintenance efforts.

If it becomes a regular habit, you could gain back more weight than you lost in the first place

Alternatively, research shows that those who follow a consistent eating pattern all throughout the week are more likely to sustain weight loss in the long term.

One study found that weekly consistency made individuals almost twice as likely to maintain their weight within five pounds (2.2 kg) over one year, compared to those who allowed more flexibility on the weekends.

9. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water is helpful for weight maintenance for a few reasons.

For starters, it promotes fullness and may help you keep your calorie intake in check if you drink a glass or two before meals.

In one study, those who drank water before eating a meal had a 13% reduction in calorie intake, compared to participants who didn’t drink water.

Additionally, drinking water has been shown to slightly increase the number of calories you burn throughout the day.

10. Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep significantly affects weight control.

In fact, sleep deprivation appears to be a major risk factor for weight gain in adults and may interfere with weight maintenance.

This is partly due to the fact that inadequate sleep leads to higher levels of ghrelin, which is known as the hunger hormone because it increases appetite.

Moreover, poor sleepers tend to have lower levels of leptin, which is a hormone necessary for appetite control.

Furthermore, those who sleep for short periods of time are simply tired and therefore less motivated to exercise and make healthy food choices.

If you’re not sleeping enough, find a way to adjust your sleep habits. Sleeping for at least seven hours a night is optimal for weight control and overall health.

11. Control Stress Levels

Managing stress is an important part of controlling your weight.

In fact, high-stress levels can contribute to weight regain by increasing levels of cortisol, which is a hormone released in response to stress.

Consistently elevated cortisol is linked to higher amounts of belly fat, as well as increased appetite and food intake.

Stress is also a common trigger for impulsive eating, which is when you eat even when you’re not hungry .

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to combat stress, including exercise, yoga and meditation.

12. Find a Support System

It can be difficult to maintain your weight goals alone.

One strategy to overcome this is to find a support system that will hold you accountable and possibly partner up with you in your healthy lifestyle.

A few studies have shown that having a buddy to pursue your goals with may be helpful for weight control, especially if that person is a partner or spouse with similar healthy habits.

One of these studies examined the health behaviors of over 3,000 couples and found that when one person engaged in a healthy habit, such as exercise, the other was more likely to follow their example.

13. Track Your Food Intake

Those who log their food intake in a journal, online food tracker or app may be more likely to maintain their weight loss.

Food trackers are helpful because they enhance your awareness of how much you are really eating, since they often provide specific information about how many calories and nutrients you consume.

Additionally, many food-tracking tools allow you to log exercise, so you can ensure you’re getting the amount you need to maintain your weight.

Here are some examples of calorie counting websites and apps.

14. Eat Plenty of Vegetables

Several studies link high vegetable intake to better weight control.

For starters, vegetables are low in calories. You can eat large portions without putting on weight, while still consuming an impressive amount of nutrients.

Also, vegetables are high in fiber, which increases feelings of fullness and may automatically reduce the number of calories that you eat during the day.

For these weight control benefits, aim to consume a serving or two of vegetables at every meal.

15. Be Consistent

Consistency is key to keeping weight off.

Instead of on-and-off dieting that ends with going back to old habits, it is best to stick with your new healthy diet and lifestyle for good.

While adopting a new way of life may seem overwhelming at first, making healthy choices will become second nature when you get used to them.

Your healthier lifestyle will be effortless, so you’ll be able to maintain your weight much more easily.

16. Practice Mindful Eating

Mindful eating is the practice of listening to internal appetite cues and paying full attention during the eating process.

It involves eating slowly, without distractions, and chewing food thoroughly so you can savor the aroma and taste of your meal.

When you eat this way, you are more likely to stop eating when you are truly full. If you eat while distracted, it can be difficult to recognize fullness and you may end up overeating.

Studies show that mindful eating helps with weight maintenance by targeting behaviors that are commonly associated with weight gain, such as emotional eating.

What’s more, those who eat mindfully may be able to maintain their weight without counting calories.

17. Make Sustainable Changes to Your Lifestyle

The reason why many people fail at maintaining their weight is because they follow unrealistic diets that are not feasible in the long term.

They end up feeling deprived, which often leads to gaining back more weight than they lost in the first place once they go back to eating normally.

Maintaining weight loss comes down to making sustainable changes to your lifestyle.

This looks different for everyone, but essentially it means not being too restrictive, staying consistent and making healthy choices as often as possible.

8 Weight Loss Tips to Ignore Completely

There is no shortage of weight loss advice on the internet.

Although some weight loss tips are helpful, others are ineffective, misleading, or downright harmful.

Here are 8 weight loss tips that you should ignore completely.

1. Always eat breakfast, even if you’re not hungry

You may have heard that it’s important to eat breakfast to boost your metabolism after sleeping through the night.

As such, many people force themselves to eat in the morning, even if they’re not hungry. However, eating breakfast isn’t necessarily beneficial for losing weight.

In fact, studies have shown that eating or skipping breakfast has very little effect on weight and that skipping it may even result in slightly more weight loss.

In one study, people who skipped breakfast ended up eating 144 calories more at lunch, compared with people who had eaten a morning meal. However, at the end of the day, their total calorie intake was still 408 calories lower.

Skipping breakfast is one form of intermittent fasting, which some people find helps them lose weight. Intermittent fasting may also have health benefits.

The idea that eating breakfast is important for weight control may be partly due to a survey of National Weight Control Registry members who had lost weight and kept it off for at least 5 years. Most of these people said they ate breakfast regularly.

However, everyone is different, and some people reap more benefits from eating breakfast than others. The current thinking is that, if you’re not hungry in the morning, there’s no reason to eat breakfast.

If you are hungry, make sure to eat a breakfast high in protein so you’ll be more satisfied and less likely to overeat at lunch.

2. Don’t weigh yourself every day

Your weight can fluctuate from day to day in response to several factors.

For this reason, many sources say you should avoid weighing yourself every day when trying to lose weight.

While this seems to make sense, the opposite may be true.

In a 6-month study on people with overweight or obesity, people who got on a scale every day consumed fewer calories and lost 6.6 % of their body weight, on average, compared with people in the control group, who lost less than 1% of their body weight.

In another study, researchers looking at the weighing habits of 40 people with overweight found that those who took breaks of longer than 1 month had a greater risk of weight gain.

Frequently weighing yourself can provide accountability and confirm that your weight is trending in the right direction.

Some studies have reported that daily weighing didn’t appear to lead to disordered eating or negative psychological effects, such as poor body image.

However, for some people, checking the scales frequently can become a source of anxiety. If you feel that it’s not good for your psychological health, it’s best to avoid this strategy.

It’s important to keep in mind that your weight can fluctuate daily. Hormonal changes, fluid balance, and bowel movement frequency can affect weight. These changes don’t reflect fat loss or gain.

3. Do juice cleanses

Juice cleanses, also known as juice fasts, are very popular.

Proponents claim you can lose up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg) in a week and rid your body of toxins.

However, there’s very little research showing that juice cleanses are safe or effective.

In one study, women drank lemon juice and syrup mixture with less than 500 calories for 7 days. They lost weight and reduced insulin resistance.

Any diet low in calories will cause weight loss, but it’s unlikely to produce lasting results.

A major issue is that a cleanse doesn’t establish the type of healthy eating habits necessary for keeping up weight loss over time.

What’s more, these juices tend to be high in sugar but low in protein, which is a bad combination for appetite control and health.

As far as detoxifying goes, your liver and other organs perform that function daily. There’s no need for a “cleanse”.

4. Don’t lose weight quickly

The conventional advice is to lose weight slowly so you’ll have a better chance of maintaining your lower weight.

While it’s certainly fine to lose weight slowly, the most recent research indicates that faster weight loss, in the beginning, does not increase the risk of weight regain. In fact, losing weight fast seems to be beneficial for long-term weight loss.

One study found that people who lost weight quickly during the first month were five times as likely to have lost 10% of their body weight within 18 months, compared with those who started off losing weight more slowly.

However, some weight loss methods are better than others. Cutting calories to extremely low levels may cause rapid weight loss in the beginning, but it’s unlikely to be sustainable.

5. Focus on cardio workouts

Cardiovascular exercise, also known as cardio or aerobic exercise, reduces your stress levels and benefits your heart and overall health.

However, cardio was not the best exercise strategy for losing weight.

Weight loss response to cardiovascular exercise depends greatly on the individual. Some people lose weight in response to cardio, while others either maintain or gain a slight amount of weight.

The best strategy for getting fit and maintaining muscle mass while losing weight is to combine strength training with cardio.

6. Minimize foods high in natural fat

Despite popular opinion, not all fats are bad for your health, and avoiding all fatty foods won’t necessarily help you lose weight.

Fat has twice as many calories as protein or carbs, but it’s also very filling and takes a long time to digest.

Standard low-fat diets, in which fat comprises less than 30% of all calories, generally have a poorer track record than other diets, such as low carb diets, when it comes to weight loss.

In fact, foods that are naturally high in fat, including avocados, nuts, and coconut, can aid weight loss.

Full-fat dairy products contain a fat called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which research has linked to lower body fat and improved insulin sensitivity.

By contrast, eating or drinking fat-free or low-fat products in an attempt to cut calories could backfire, as many of these products are loaded with refined sugar.

While eating foods naturally high in healthy fat can work in your favor, putting a lot of added fat on your food is not helpful. Adding too much fat can increase calories to the point where you won’t lose weight.

That said, ultra-low-fat diets, in which fat comprises less than 10% of calories, may have some benefits for weight loss.

7. Eat every 2–3 hours

You may have heard that it’s best to eat many small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism up. This is a myth.

In one small study, researchers gave two groups the same number of calories either in two large meals or spread between seven small meals. They found no difference in calories burned between the two groups.

Controlled studies have shown that eating many small meals does not result in greater weight loss, compared with eating three or fewer meals per day.

What’s more, research has linked frequent meals after weight loss surgery with diminished weight loss 6 months after the procedure.

The main problem with snacking or eating many small meals is that you often end up consuming more calories than your body needs.

Read about healthy snack options for weight loss.

8. Focus only on calorie intake

While people need to create a calorie deficit to lose weight, calorie intake is only part of the story.

The type of food you eat has a huge effect on hunger, appetite, and the hormones that control weight. These factors can affect your ability to achieve a calorie deficit.

For instance, eating a 100-calorie pack of pretzels is not the same as eating 100 calories of fruit. Pretzels are made of refined carbs, which can raise blood sugar levels, cause hunger, and lead to overeating.

By contrast, getting the same amount of calories from high protein foods results in hormone changes that lead to increased fullness and reduced hunger.

In addition, protein has a higher thermic effect than either carbs or fat, meaning it burns more calories during and after digestion.

Studies have demonstrated that calorie intake naturally goes down when you restrict carbs, and that weight loss is greater on low carb diets than it is on low-fat diets.

Finally, even if calories were the only thing that mattered, it’s very difficult to accurately gauge how many you’re eating. One study found that people with obesity underestimated their true food intake by 47%, on average.

Furthermore, calorie counts on processed foods are often inaccurate.

10 Morning Habits That Help You Lose Weight

No matter what your weight loss goals are, losing weight can feel impossible at times.

However, shedding a few pounds doesn’t have to involve a complete overhaul of your current diet and lifestyle.

In fact, making a few small changes to your morning routine can help you lose weight and keep it off.

This article lists 10 simple morning habits to incorporate into your regimen to aid your weight loss efforts.

1. Eat a High-Protein Breakfast

There’s a good reason breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day.

What you eat for breakfast can set the course for your entire day. It determines if you’ll feel full and satisfied until lunch, or if you’ll be heading to the vending machine before your mid-morning snack.

Eating a high-protein breakfast may help cut cravings and aid in weight loss.

In one study in 20 adolescent girls, eating a high-protein breakfast reduced post-meal cravings more effectively than a normal-protein breakfast.

Another small study showed that eating a high-protein breakfast was associated with less fat gain and reduced daily intake and hunger, compared to a normal protein breakfast.

Protein may also aid weight loss by decreasing levels of ghrelin, the “hunger hormone” that is responsible for increasing appetite.

In fact, one study in 15 men found that a high-protein breakfast suppressed ghrelin secretion more effectively than a high-carb breakfast.

To help get your day off to a good start, consider protein sources like eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, and chia seeds.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Starting your morning with a glass or two of water is an easy way to enhance weight loss.

Water can help increase your energy expenditure or the number of calories your body burns, for at least 60 minutes.

In one small study, drinking 16.9 fluid ounces (500 ml) of water led to a 30% increase in metabolic rate, on average.

Another study found that overweight women who increased their water intake to over 34 ounces (one liter) per day lost an extra 4.4 pounds (2 kg) over one year, without making any other changes in their diet or exercise routine.

What’s more, drinking water may reduce appetite and food intake in some individuals.

One study in 24 older adults showed that drinking 16.9 fluid ounces (500 ml) of water reduced the number of calories consumed at breakfast by 13%.

In fact, most studies on the topic have shown that drinking 34–68 ounces (1–2 liters) of water per day can aid in weight loss.

Starting your morning with water and staying well hydrated throughout the day is a great way to boost weight loss with minimal effort.

3. Weigh Yourself

Stepping on the scale and weighing yourself each morning can be an effective method to increase motivation and improve self-control.

Several studies have associated weighing yourself daily with greater weight loss.

For instance, a study in 47 people found that those who weighed themselves daily lost about 13 pounds (6 kg) more over six months than those who weighed themselves less often.

Another study reported that adults who weighed themselves daily lost an average of 9.7 pounds (4.4 kg) over a two-year period, while those who weighed themselves once a month gained 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg).

Weighing yourself every morning can also help foster healthy habits and behaviors that may promote weight loss.

In one large study, frequent self-weighing was associated with improved restraint. Furthermore, those who stopped weighing themselves frequently were more likely to report increased calorie intake and decreased self-discipline.

For best results, weigh yourself right when you wake up. Do so after using the bathroom and before you eat or drink anything.

Additionally, remember that your weight may fluctuate daily and can be influenced by a variety of factors. Focus on the big picture and look for overall weight loss trends, rather than getting fixated on small day-to-day changes.

4. Get Some Sun

Opening the curtains to let in some sunlight or spending a few extra minutes outside each morning can help kickstart your weight loss.

One small study found that exposure to even moderate levels of light at certain times of the day can have an influence on weight.

Moreover, an animal study found that exposure to ultraviolet radiation helped suppress weight gain in mice fed a high-fat diet.

Exposure to sunlight is also the best way to meet your vitamin D needs. Some studies have found that meeting your vitamin D requirements can aid in weight loss and even prevent weight gain.

In one study, 218 overweight and obese women took either vitamin D supplements or a placebo for one year. At the end of the study, those who met their vitamin D requirement lost an average of 7 pounds (3.2 kg) more than those with inadequate vitamin D blood levels.

Another study followed 4,659 older women for four years and found that higher levels of vitamin D were linked to less weight gain.

The amount of sun exposure you need can vary based on your skin type, the season, and your location. However, letting in some sunlight or sitting outside for 10–15 minutes each morning may have a beneficial effect on weight loss.

5. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice that involves fully focusing on the present moment and bringing awareness to your thoughts and feelings.

The practice has been shown to enhance weight loss and promote healthy eating habits.

For example, an analysis of 19 studies found that mindfulness-based interventions increased weight loss and reduced obesity-related eating behaviors.

Another review had similar findings, noting that mindfulness training resulted in significant weight loss in 68% of the studies reviewed.

Practicing mindfulness is simple. To get started, try spending five minutes each morning sitting comfortably in a calm space and connecting with your senses.

6. Squeeze in Some Exercise

Getting in some physical activity first thing in the morning can help boost weight loss.

One study in 50 overweight women measured the effects of aerobic exercise at different times of the day.

While there was not much difference noted in specific food cravings between those who exercised in the morning versus the afternoon, working out in the morning was associated with a higher level of satiety.

Exercising in the morning may also help keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the day. Low blood sugar can result in many negative symptoms, including excessive hunger.

One study in 35 people with type 1 diabetes showed that working out in the morning was associated with improved blood sugar control.

However, these studies focused on very specific populations and show an association, rather than causation. More research on the effects of morning exercise in the general population is needed.

7. Pack Your Lunch

Making the effort to plan and pack your lunch ahead of time can be a simple way to make better food choices and increase weight loss.

A large study including 40,554 people found that meal planning was associated with better diet quality, more diet variety, and a lower risk of obesity.

Another study found that eating home-cooked meals more frequently was associated with improved diet quality and a decreased risk of excess body fat.

In fact, those who ate home-cooked meals at least five times per week were 28% less likely to be overweight than those who only ate home-cooked meals three times or less per week.

Try setting aside a few hours one night a week to plan and prepare your meals so that in the morning you can just grab your lunch and go.

8. Sleep Longer

Going to bed a bit earlier or setting your alarm clock later to squeeze in some extra sleep may help increase weight loss.

Several studies have found that sleep deprivation may be associated with an increased appetite.

One small study found that sleep restriction increased hunger and cravings, especially for high-carb, high-calorie foods.

Lack of sleep has also been linked to an increase in calorie intake.

In one study, 12 participants consumed an average of 559 more calories after getting just four hours of sleep, compared to when they got a full eight hours.

Establishing a healthy sleep schedule is a critical component of weight loss, along with eating well and exercising. To maximize your results, aim for at least eight hours of sleep per night.

9. Switch up Your Commute

While driving may be one of the most convenient ways to get to work, it may not be so great for your waistline.

Research shows that walking, biking, or using public transportation may be tied to lower body weight and reduced risk of weight gain.

One study followed 822 people over four years and found that those who commuted by car tended to gain more weight than non-car commuters.

Similarly, a study including 15,777 people showed that using public transportation or active methods of transport, such as walking or biking, was associated with a significantly lower body mass index and body fat percentage, compared to using private transportation.

Changing up your commute even a few times per week may be a simple way to ramp up weight loss.

10. Start Tracking Your Intake

Keeping a food diary to track what you eat can be an effective way to help boost weight loss and keep yourself accountable.

One study tracked weight loss in 123 people for one year and found that completing a food journal was associated with a greater amount of weight loss.

Another study showed that participants who regularly used a tracking system to self-monitor their diet and exercise lost more weight than those who did not regularly use the tracking system.

Similarly, a study of 220 obese women found that the frequent and consistent use of a self-monitoring tool helped improve long-term weight management.

Try using an app or even just a pen and paper to record what you eat and drink, starting with your first meal of the day.

The 11 Best Fruits for Weight Loss

The fruit is nature’s ready-made snack packed with vitamins, fiber, and other nutrients that support a healthy diet.

The fruit is also generally low in calories and high in fiber, which may help you lose weight.

In fact, eating fruit is linked to lower body weight and a lower risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and heart disease.

Here are 11 of the best fruits to eat for weight loss.

1. Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a cross between a pomelo and an orange and is commonly associated with dieting and weight loss.

Half a grapefruit contains just 39 calories but provides 65% of the reference daily intake (RDI) for vitamin C. Red varieties also provide 28% of the RDI for vitamin A.

What’s more, grapefruit has a low glycemic index (GI), which means it releases sugar into your bloodstream more slowly. A low-GI diet may aid weight loss and weight maintenance, though the evidence is limited.

In a study in 85 obese people, eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice before meals for 12 weeks resulted in a decrease in calorie intake, a 7.1% decrease in body weight, and improved cholesterol levels.

Additionally, a recent review found that grapefruit consumption reduced body fat, waist circumference, and blood pressure compared to control groups.

While grapefruit can be eaten on its own, it also makes a great addition to salads and other dishes.

2. Apples

Apples are low in calories and high in fiber, with 116 calories and 5.4 grams of fiber per large fruit (223 grams).

They have also been found to support weight loss.

In one study, women were given three apples, three pears, or three oat cookies — with the same calorie value — per day for 10 weeks. The apple group lost 2 pounds (0.91 kg) and the pear group 1.6 pounds (0.84 kg), while the oat group’s weight did not change.

Additionally, an observational study in 124,086 individuals determined that people who ate apples lost an average of 1.24 pounds (0.56 kg) per daily serving over a four-year period.

Because low-calorie fruits like apples are more filling, you may eat less of other foods during the course of the day. Notably, an apple is almost three times as filling as a chocolate bar.

Research shows that apples are best eaten whole — rather than juiced — to reduce hunger and control appetite.

That said, two studies link apple juice to reductions in body fat compared to a control drink with the same number of calories. Apple polyphenol extract — made from one of the fruit’s natural compounds — has also been linked to reduced cholesterol levels.

Apples can be enjoyed in a variety of ways both cooked and raw. Try adding them to hot and cold cereals, yogurt, stews, and salads, or baking them on their own.

3. Berries

Berries are low-calorie nutrient powerhouses.

For example, a 1/2 cup (74 grams) of blueberries contains just 42 calories but provides 12% of the RDI for vitamin C and manganese, as well as 18% for vitamin K.

One cup (152 grams) of strawberries contains under 50 calories and provides 3 grams of dietary fiber, as well as 150% of the RDI for vitamin C and almost 30% for manganese.

Berries have also been shown to be filling. One small study found that people given a 65-calorie berry snack ate less food at a subsequent meal than that given candy with the same number of calories.

Additionally, eating berries may help decrease cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, and lower inflammation, which may be particularly helpful to people who are overweight.

Both fresh or frozen berries can be added to cereal or yogurt for breakfast, blended in a healthy smoothie, mixed into baked goods, or tossed in a salad.

4. Stone Fruits

Stone fruits, also known as drupes, are a group of seasonal fruits with a fleshy exterior and a stone, or pit, on the inside. They include peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and apricots.

Stone fruits are low-GI, low-calorie, and rich in nutrients like vitamins C and A — which make them great for people trying to lose weight.

For example, one medium peach (150 grams) contains 58 calories, while 1 cup (130 grams) of cherries provides 87 calories, and two small plums (120 grams) or four apricots (140 grams) have just 60 calories.

Compared to unhealthy snack foods like chips or cookies, stone fruits are a more nutrient-dense, filling option.

Stone fruits can be eaten fresh, chopped up in fruit salads, mixed into a hearty porridge, or even grilled or added to savory dishes like stews.

Passion fruit, which originates in South America, grows on a beautiful, flowering vine. It has a tough outer rind — purple or yellow in color — with an edible, pulpy seed mass inside.

One fruit (18 grams) contains just 17 calories and is a rich source of fiber, vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, and potassium.

For such a small fruit, passion fruit holds ample dietary fiber. In fact, five of them give 42% of the RDI for fewer than 100 calories.

Fiber slows down your digestion, helping you feel fuller for longer and controlling your appetite.

Additionally, passion fruit seeds provide piceatannol, a substance linked to reductions in blood pressure, and improved insulin sensitivity in overweight men. However, more research is needed.

For weight loss, passion fruit is best-consumed whole. It can be eaten alone, used as a topping or filling for desserts, or added to drinks.

6. Rhubarb

Rhubarb is actually a vegetable, but in Europe and North America, it is often prepared like a fruit.

While it has only 11 calories per stalk, it still packs almost 1 gram of fiber and almost 20% of the RDI for vitamin K.

Additionally, rhubarb fiber may help reduce high cholesterol, which is a common problem for people who struggle with their weight.

In a study in 83 people with atherosclerosis — a disease of the arteries — those given 23 mg of dried rhubarb extract per pound of body weight (50 mg per kg) for six months experienced a significant decrease in cholesterol and improved blood vessel function.

Rhubarb stalks can be stewed and served with porridge or your favorite cereal. Although it can be used in many ways, including in desserts, it’s best to stick to low-sugar rhubarb dishes when trying to lose weight.

7. Kiwifruit

Kiwifruits are small, brown fruits with bright green or yellow flesh and tiny black seeds.

Very nutrient-dense, kiwis are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin E, folate, and fiber, and have significant health benefits.

In one study, 41 people with prediabetes ate two golden kiwis per day for 12 weeks. They experienced higher vitamin C levels, a reduction in blood pressure, and a 1.2-inch (3.1-cm) reduction in waist circumference.

Additional studies note that kiwi can help control blood sugar, improve cholesterol, and support gut health — all additional weight loss benefits.

Kiwis have a low GI, so while they do contain sugar, it is released more slowly — resulting in smaller blood sugar spikes.

Furthermore, kiwis are rich in dietary fiber. One small, peeled fruit (69 grams) has over 2 grams of fiber, while the skin alone provides 1 extra gram of fiber.

Diets high in fiber from fruits and vegetables have been shown to promote weight loss, increase fullness, and improve gut health.

Kiwifruit is soft, sweet, and delicious when eaten raw, peeled, or unpeeled. It can also be juiced, used in salads, added to your morning cereal, or used in baked goods.

8. Melons

Melons are low in calories and have a high water content, which makes them very weight loss friendly.

Just 1 cup (150—160 grams) of melon, such as honeydew or watermelon, provides a modest 46—61 calories.

Though low in calories, melons are rich in fiber, potassium, and antioxidants, such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, and lycopene.

Moreover, consuming fruits with high water content may help you shed extra weight.

However, watermelon does have a high GI, so portion control is important.

Melons can be enjoyed fresh, cubed, or balled to liven up a fruit salad. They’re also easily blended into fruit smoothies or frozen into fruit popsicles.

9. Oranges

Like all citrus fruits, oranges are low in calories while high in vitamin C and fiber. They are also very filling.

In fact, oranges are four times more filling than a croissant and twice as filling as a muesli bar.

While many people consume orange juice instead of orange slices, studies have found that eating whole fruits — rather than drinking fruit juices — not only results in less hunger and calorie intake but also increased feelings of fullness.

Therefore, if you are trying to lose weight, it may be better to eat oranges rather than drink orange juice. The fruit can be eaten alone or added to your favorite salad or dessert.

10. Bananas

When trying to lose weight, some people avoid bananas due to their high sugar and calorie content.

While bananas are more calorie-dense than many other fruits, they are also more nutrient-dense, supplying potassium, magnesium, manganese, fiber, numerous antioxidants, and vitamins A, B6, and C.

They are low to medium GI may help control insulin levels and regulate weight — particularly for people who have diabetes.

Additionally, one study illustrated that eating a banana per day reduced both blood sugar and cholesterol in people with high cholesterol.

High-quality, nutrient-dense, and low-calorie foods like bananas are vital to any healthy weight loss plan.

Bananas can be enjoyed on their own as a convenient on-the-go snack or added either raw or cooked to a wide variety of dishes.

11. Avocados

Avocados are a fatty, calorie-dense fruit grown in warm climates.

Half an avocado (100 grams) contains 160 calories, making it one of the most calorie-dense fruits. The same amount provides 25% of the RDI for vitamin K and 20% for folate.

Despite their high calorie and fat content, avocados may promote weight loss.

In one study, 61 overweight people ate a diet containing either 200 grams of avocado or 30 grams of other fats (margarine and oils). Both groups experienced significant weight loss, indicating that avocados are a smart choice for those looking to lose weight.

Other studies have found that eating avocados can increase feelings of fullness, decrease appetite, and improve cholesterol levels.

Additionally, a large study of American eating patterns revealed that people who ate avocados tended to have healthier diets, a lower risk of metabolic syndrome, and lower body weights than people who didn’t eat them.

Avocados can be used as a replacement for butter or margarine on bread and toast. You can also add them to salads, smoothies, or dips.
